The real problem though was that the neck was bent forward, through having been badly stored with the strings under tension for many years. This had depressed and distorted the area of the body under the fingerboard, by quite a bit, some 4 to 5 mil, which resulted in a very high action, about 10 mil at the 12th fret. So I figured that if I was going to fix the neck, I might as well fix all the other bits that needed doing. I'm not aiming to sell it, it will stay in the family.
